My husband and I were recently having a conversation with my step-mom and father about snoring and sleep apnea. It’s something that my husband suffers from, and my father used to suffer from.
Upon bringing up the issue, my step-mom told me that it could be completely caused by gluten sensitivity, and that as soon as my father cut gluten out of his diet, his sleep apnea and snoring subsided and his restless leg went away, too!
I had no idea that gluten sensitivity could cause something as unrelated as snoring and sleep apnea, but apparently gluten causes inflammation throughout the body, and many don’t realize that their stuffy noses aren’t stuffy at all!
They’re inflamed!
This shocking information prompted me to do some more research, and my findings are just surprising. There are literally hundreds of symptoms of gluten sensitivity, and a whole bunch of full blown diseases that stem from it. Below are just a few of the most common symptoms, though if you feel you don’t have any of them but are still sensitive to gluten, chances are that you indeed are sensitive to it and are just showing it differently.
An article titled “Common Gluten Symptoms” published by Simply Gluten Free quotes Dr. Vikki Petersen, a Chiropractor and Certified Clinical Nutritionist, and a co-founder and co-director (along with her husband, Dr. Richard Petersen) of the renowned HealthNow Medical Center and acclaimed author of the book The Gluten Effect , as she lists the most common symptoms of gluten sensitivity.
She says, “Chronic intestinal problems, Infertility or recurrent miscarriage, Chronic anemia, Osteoporosis, Migraine Headaches, Obesity, Arthritis, Memory loss, Psoriasis, Eczema, IBS, Bipolar or Schizophrenia, Increased liver enzymes, Low thyroid (Hypothyroid), ADD or ADHD, Autism, Fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Restless Legs Syndrome, Sleep Apnea, Type I or II diabetes, Multiple Sclerosis, and Any Autoimmune Disease,” are just some of the potential symptoms of gluten sensitivity of intolerance.
Just by looking at this list, it is easy to see how one could confuse a symptom with another cause, and spend their entire life never realizing that they are intolerant of gluten. Many take prescription after prescription to no avail, always masking the problem and never fixing it.
To find out if you are gluten intolerant, all you have to do is eliminate it from your diet for a short period of time. If your problems subside and you feel better, you should permanently eliminate it from your diet.
