Coffee is a staple in the daily routine of most working adults.
But have you heard about green coffee? According to a study, green coffee bean extract can help promote weight loss, making it a great alternative to regular coffee if you want to maintain a healthy weight naturally.
According to Rick Hay, Healthista’s Nutritional Director, green coffee bean extract is a natural stimulant that is “a less processed version of coffee and has less caffeine than regular coffee.”
Coffee beans are full of beneficial antioxidants and chlorogenic acid, a compound that experts believe is the principal ingredient in green coffee beans that produces weight loss effects.
Unlike regular coffee beans that have been roasted, green coffee beans remain completely raw. While popular as a dietary supplement, you can also get green coffee in whole-bean form and use it to make a hot beverage, just like roasted coffee.
However, green coffee has a much milder flavor compared to regular roasted coffee. The beverage tastes more like an herbal tea than a regular coffee.
Roasted coffee products contain only small amounts of chlorogenic acid, and most of it is lost when the coffee is roasted.
The chemical profile of green coffee is different from roasted coffee, but their origins are similar. The chlorogenic acid in green coffee is a powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory agent that provides many health benefits.
In a Norwegian study conducted over 12 weeks on 30 overweight volunteers, one group was given regular instant coffee and another group was given instant coffee enriched with 200 mg of green coffee bean extract.
Researchers instructed both groups to maintain their usual diet or exercise habits.
The findings showed that the group drinking the instant coffee with green coffee bean extract lost three times as much weight as those in the group drinking plain instant coffee or 5.4 kg on average compared to 1.7 kg over the 12-week study.
Green coffee bean extract doesn’t just help promote weight loss. The extract can also help boost energy production and blood circulation, and improve immune function because it is full of antioxidant polyphenols.
Data also suggests that green coffee bean extract may reduce the risk of some chronic diseases like diabetes and heart disease.
In an eight-week study, 50 participants with metabolic syndrome — a cluster of risk factors like high blood pressure and blood sugar that increase their risk for diabetes and heart disease — were given 400 mg of decaffeinated green coffee bean extract twice a day.
Researchers found that the volunteers experienced significant improvements in blood pressure, fasting blood sugar and waist circumference.
If you are trying to lose weight, look for a nutrient powder that contains green coffee bean extract powder. Add a scoop of the powder to your water bottle before or during a workout to boost your energy and metabolism without the crash.
You can also add green coffee bean extract to a green or fruit smoothie, juice or a glass of water.
Like other products that contain caffeine, it is best to monitor your intake of green coffee bean extract. The recommended dosage is between 200 to 400 mg of green coffee bean powder daily.
Here are some of the other health benefits of green coffee:
Antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects
According to studies, green coffee beans have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.
Chronic inflammation can damage your cells and is a key driver in many health conditions like arthritis, autoimmune disease, cancer and diabetes. This means following a balanced diet and consuming foods full of antioxidants like green coffee bean extract can have significant health benefits.
Can help control blood pressure
Green coffee extract can have a positive effect on blood vessels, which is crucial for your heart health.
According to a 2019 review, consuming more than 400 mg of the extract for four weeks significantly reduced both systolic and diastolic blood pressure in those with hypertension or high blood pressure.
Can help control Type 2 diabetes
Chlorogenic acids can help regulate glucose and insulin. Additionally, the acids could also help prevent or control Type 2 diabetes. (Related: Does coffee prevent diabetes?)
The results of a 2020 review revealed that green coffee extract could improve blood glucose levels. When consumed at doses of more than 400 mg per day, it could also improve insulin levels.
Follow a balanced diet and consume the recommended 400 mg of green bean coffee extract daily to lose weight naturally.
